CSV to JSON Converter Online – Free Table to JSON Tool

csvClient-side utility

Business data often lives in spreadsheet exports and CSV text, while web applications, REST APIs, and database seed scripts frequently use structured JSON. Manually converting tabular rows into an array of JSON objects is slow and error-prone, especially across large datasets. This browser-based CSV to JSON converter reads the first row as column headers and converts each subsequent row into a structured JSON object. Paste your comma-delimited data into the editor, click "Convert to JSON", and copy the formatted result — or download it as a .json file — for use in development workflows. Conversion runs locally in your browser, so the entered data is not intentionally sent to our servers.

📖How to Use This Tool

What is a CSV to JSON Converter?

Comma-Separated Values (CSV) is a tabular data format that represents database rows as lines of plain text. CSV commonly separates fields with commas, although some regional and application-specific exports use other delimiters — this tool currently expects comma-delimited input.

JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is a widely used data interchange format for modern web APIs, applications, and development tools. Converting CSV to JSON transforms flat tabular rows into an array of structured objects, using the first row's column names as object keys.

How to use it

  1. Paste your comma-delimited CSV data into the input text area.
  2. Ensure the first row contains your column headers, which become the JSON object keys.
  3. Click "Convert to JSON" to run the transformation.
  4. Copy the formatted JSON output, or click Download to save it as a .json file.

Why use this over alternatives

This converter processes CSV input locally in your browser using client-side JavaScript. The CSV content and generated JSON are not intentionally sent to our servers, and no account is required. This provides a convenient way to convert development samples, spreadsheet exports, and other tabular data.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How does the converter treat column headers?

The first row of your input is interpreted as the header row. Each header label becomes an object key in the resulting JSON, with subsequent rows converted into individual objects. Header names should be unique and non-empty: duplicate headers cause later values to overwrite earlier ones, and blank headers produce empty-string keys.

Q.How are commas, quotation marks, and line breaks inside fields handled?

Fields containing commas, double quotation marks, or line breaks should be enclosed in double quotation marks. A literal double quotation mark inside a quoted field is escaped by doubling it — for example, a field containing He said "Hello" is written as "He said ""Hello""" in CSV. The parser respects these conventions, keeping quoted commas and line breaks as part of the field value.

Q.How are numbers, Boolean values, and empty cells handled?

CSV does not define explicit data types, so this converter preserves every field value as a string. That keeps leading-zero identifiers, long numeric codes, and values like "true" intact rather than reinterpreted. Missing fields become empty strings ("").

Q.What happens when a row has more or fewer fields than the header?

Rows with fewer fields than headers get empty strings for the missing values; extra fields beyond the header count are ignored. The tool does not warn about inconsistent rows, so check that your data is rectangular before converting.

Q.Can this tool process large CSV datasets?

Processing occurs in your browser, so practical capacity depends on the input size, row width, available memory, browser, and device. Typical pasted datasets should process normally, while very large inputs may reduce responsiveness or exceed browser memory limits.

Q.Why does the first JSON key contain an unexpected character?

Some spreadsheet applications add a byte order mark (BOM) at the start of a UTF-8 CSV export, which this tool does not strip automatically — it becomes part of the first header name. If the first key looks wrong, re-save the source as UTF-8 without a BOM, or delete the hidden leading character before converting.

Q.Is my CSV data sent to a server?

Conversion is performed locally in your browser using client-side JavaScript. The tool does not intentionally send the CSV content or converted JSON to our servers. Avoid processing sensitive records on shared or untrusted devices, and review your organization's data-handling requirements before using confidential datasets.
